the holiest city for the Sikhs in the state of Punjab, India. This
temple is a symbol of freedom and spiritual independence. Devotees from
all over the world come to the to enjoy offer prayers and enjoy the
peaceful envirnoment. The official name of the Temple is Harmandir Sahib
or Darbar Sahib, which means literally: The Abode of God. Jallianwala Bagh Jallianwala Bagh reminds of the Masscare that involved the killing of hundreds of unarmed, defenseless Indians by a senior British military officer under the command of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer. The incident took place on 13 April 1919 in the heart of Amritsar, on the birth anniversary of the Khalsa (Sikh Guru). Jallianwala Bagh, a garden belonging to the Jalla, derives name from that of the owners of this piece of land in Sikh times. It was then the property the family of Sardar Himmat Singh (d.1829), a noble in the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839), who originally came from the village of Jalla, now in Fatehgarh Sahib District of the Punjab. Wagah Border The final frontier, Wagah about 28 km from Amritsar is the only border crossing between India and Pakistan. Its an interesting experience, especially at sunset when the 'Retreat' ceremony takes place with the BSF on the Indian Side of the Border. The changing of the guards and the ceremonial lowering of the flags is carried out with great enthusiasm. |
